Twenty stripers in a half day trip… how much better can it
get than that? In 2005 my father-in-law purchased a house on Lake Lanier
and moved up here from South Florida. At 86,
he has been an avid fisherman all his life. Since moving to Cumming he has been
talking about going striper fishing.
A few days ago I was enjoying a late breakfast at the Dam Store with Jack Tiller from Talk Fusion
and was introduced to Captain Quin. Jack assured me that Quin is the best
striper guide on the lake. I had seen pictures of the fish Jack and his lady
had caught on their last trip and decided that 2 years was long enough. I
booked Quin for the following Wednesday, called my father-in-law and told him
we were going fishing.
Wednesday, was the perfect fishing day, overcast, cool with a light breeze. It took Quin about 20 minutes to find a nice school of Stripers
out near Lake Lanier Islands.
Quin baited up two lines and we went to work… within 30 seconds I had a fish on
and caught the first fish of the day. For the next hour I watched a motionless
rod, mine, while my father-in-law caught striper after striper. He even caught
the big fish of the day; a striper weighing in at about 13 pounds.
It took me a while to figure out why I wasn’t catching anything, Quin, was giving me the ugly
bait! Eventually the school we were fishing moved off as did we. Settling over another
school of stripers up near Aqualand we started in again – this time I made sure
I got the pretty bait.
The final tally we put 15 – count-em – 15 stripers in theboat. 14 of them ranged in size from about 6 pounds to 8 pounds and one weighed
about 13 pounds. We lost another 4 or 5, I actually lost count. At one point we
had four lines in the water and had stripers on each line. We were so busy we
ended up losing two of them.
Being one of the "GOOD News" guys does have it benfits - What a day! A fisherman’s dream comes true. If you want to enjoy the kind of day we had give Quin a call at: Captain’s Quin’s Striper
Guide Services – 770-503-5955.
Oh, just in case you’re curious it was a catch –take picture – release day. All of them went back in the lake after being given
strict instructions from Captain Quin “don’t tell anybody.”
