A Resuce in WrightsvilleOne night this week, I traveled to Wrightsville, Georgia, taking one of our residents to a court appearance. He was really afraid of what the judge would do. He had been involved in a fight in Wrightsville and had been arrested. But, at the Macon Rescue Mission he made a commitment to starting a new life. I was there hoping that the judge would let me speak on his behalf. I would have told about his contributions here, doing his chores around the building cheerfully – and without having to be told twice. I would have talked about the Sunday he decided to be baptized in our chapel here. I would have talked about an incident where he controlled his temper and used good judgment. But, as it turned out, he did that for himself in a private conference during one of the recesses. I was sitting in the gallery looking on as the judge called his name. He walked to the front, and the judge shook his hand. The arresting officer gave him a hug. And he was free. All the way back I was thinking, and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. What we do here at the mission really makes sense. Why send people to jail when you can help them straighten out their lives? Thank you, readers of the newsletter, for making this possible.
