“Good bye. Good luck. God bless you. Keep in touch.”“Good bye. Good luck. God bless you. Keep in touch.” We say those things often as people leave the Macon Rescue Mission. Sometimes I never hear from them again. And I wonder where they are – and how they are. So it’s great when I hear from a former resident. Sometimes my phone will ring and the voice says, “Mr. Dave, it’s me.” Sometimes it’s a knock on my door, and there’s a familiar, smiling face. The message is always the same: “I just want to thank you for everything you did for me.” I saw one fellow just a few days ago. He has a good job now and a place of his own. He has re-established contact with his two daughters and other family members. He attends church faithfully. And he devotes a great deal of his time and energy to helping other people who are alcoholics and addicts. With a big smile, he says to anyone who will listen, “If I can do it, you can do it.” So I’m writing this today, to pass along to you – those of you who support the mission – the grateful appreciation of the people you have helped. They are out there in the world, making it on their own. They’re working, raising families, going to church and living full lives – all because you cared enough to help. “Good bye. Good luck. God bless you. Keep in touch.” Dave Wallace |
