It Was A Cold December NightIt was a cold December night, and I was working late. I got a call from a woman who said her neighbor’s heat wasn’t working. She wanted me to take them some blankets. She said she had called and called – but, since it was late, she hadn’t been able to reach anyone who could help. I went upstairs in our men’s division, where we had an abundance of donated blankets, and got several. Then I thought that maybe they could use some food. So I got a box and walked back to the pantry. One of our men was working late, too, cleaning up the kitchen and putting things away. I told him I needed some food for a family who had no heat. I started filling the box up with things that didn’t have to be cooked – canned tuna, bread, mayonnaise, potato chips. Then I heard a question come from out in the kitchen, “How far away do they live?” I answered, “They’re close by, just a few miles.” And he said, “Then, let me make them a hot meal.” In just a few minutes he had prepared something wonderful and covered it in foil so it would arrive ready to eat. I got to the house, and, sure enough, there were two adults and six children all piled into one bed in a room with a small space heater. They were so happy to get the blankets and food! Now, I’ve thought about this often since that night. Especially the generosity of our resident, the man who was cleaning the kitchen. Homeless himself, he didn’t have much to give – but he gave what he could. And what a wonderful expression of love! Like the story of the poor widow in Mark 12: 41-44, this story reminds us that no matter how much or how little we have – everyone can give.
