There’s music in the air! There’s music in the air! We’ve been having something we call “Music Night,” for the past few months here at the mission. Last month a Christian rock group called “Blu” came through on their way to a concert in Orlando, and they gave us a great two-hour show. After the show, they stayed and talked with us, gave us free CDs – and autographed them for us. Jeff McGill, Wendy Brannen, Dayne Hatten, Bray and Michelle Carr and Charles Reynolds – all local singers and songwriters – did a show for us filled with gospel, bluegrass and folk music. They played the piano, guitar, mandolin, Dobro, bass and fiddle. Then they, too, stayed around and chatted with the residents. If you visit the mission, you’ll also hear music just about every evening. We’ve been collecting musical instruments, and making them available to the people here. We have a piano, a bass guitar and three acoustic guitars – and some instruction books. I love it when I walk down the hall and hear a group in there singing and playing quietly. I’ve noticed that those who can play the instruments are quick to teach what they know to someone else. Recently, one of our best guitar players left to check in to the VA hospital in Dublin. “I’m sure gonna miss that music,” he said. So, as he was getting on the van to leave, we gave him one of the guitars to take with him. We just got a letter from him, and they’ve asked him to perform for the residents there. He said he will never forget us. Music is such a blessing! When you’re sad, you sing the blues. When you’re happy you whistle a happy tune. We all learned the ABCs by singing a song. And when you want to worship God, a song expresses your feelings like nothing else. That’s what our residents are doing. Music is also therapeutic. It’s a way to express your feelings. It’s a healthy, and enjoyable way to pass the time. It’s a way to make friends. Music is in the air! Thank you for making it possible. |
